It's been long time since my last post here on this blog. Anyways, we have a pretty cool news for all VoIP lovers: yesterday we released our genuine SIP soft-phone written in Adobe's Flash. The features are:

1. Nothing to install, no need to register new accounts. Just open https://www.flash2voip.com and the Flash app will start itself and asking you to sign in into your existing SIP account.

2. Works fine with SIP accounts coming from almost any SIP provider, just make sure you provide proper SIP Proxy address.

3. Works from WinXP, Mac and Linux. There is a possibility it will work on mobiles when Adobe pushes their Flash Player 10 to mobile devices world-wide.

4. Overcomes strict firewalls which block SIP or UDP traffic.

5. Can be used with our GTalk2VoIP infrastructure to make cheap calls through our certified privders/routes.

6. Can be used to receive calls!

On 31th of March 2008 our GTalk2VoIP gatewaying service has adopted a new, and we suppose, very powerful feature: now any VoIM user (I'm bit tired typing in all the messenger names) can buy a real phone number within any of a large list of coutry codes (at the moment 40+ country codes are availabel) right from their personal account page (MYPAGE) and start receiving phone calls right into IM messenger. The calling service is free of charge, but one has to pay monthly and setup fees for the phone numers he or she is subscribing to. Fees vary from $2 a month depending on country code and phone number vendor. The cheapest numbers are available in US/North America country code - $2/month for a phone number in +1-567 area.

Every phone number purchase is provided with 12 hours of testing period during which user can release recently bought phone number and get 100% refund (money back). So we encourage every one to try this new service, even if you won't need it or find it not of sufficient quality you can release your numbers withing 12 hours and get you money returned to your balance. We also want to hear your feedbacks on this service and a list of country codes you think that we are missing.

Talkonaut for Symbian S60, pre-release.

For the last few months we have been working hard on preparing for release of our new and native Talkonaut mobile software for Symbian S60 platform. Although we devoted a lot of time tesing it extensively, there is always a room for a bug. So we thought that you might be interested in helping us with testing process. You may download a pre-release version of new Talkonaut from http://www.gtalk2voip.com/~rz/talkonaut-s60-3rd.SIS. We expect to hear constructive feedbacks from you, so if you are not ready for "undesirable" features, you better not try it at all :).

Meanwhile, I managed to arrange some time to write a small essay regarding our mobile voip development process and all the experience we got. Here is an excerp:

Since the very start of GTalk2VoIP project early in 2006 we at GTalk2VoIP TEAM had been nursing the idea of creating something very Google Talk like for mobile phones which could be used to make voice calls over GPRS (and WIFI) as simple as it is made in Google Talk: you see a contact of your friend, if he/she is present, you press Call button and you talk. So easy and so powerful, isn’t it ? On the opposite, the mainstream consumer VoIP software (so called soft-phones) was and still is very unfriendly: simply downloading a SIP phone onto your PC won’t make you able to make calls over the internet instantly, you will need to obtain a SIP account, configure it into your soft-phone, define a dozen of other settings like STUN server, dialing schemes depending on your SIP provider, etc, and only after that, if you were lucky enough, you will be able to add your friend’s SIP URI into list of contacts, then call. Of course being able to manage as many settings is very positive feature for a power user, but for an average this kind of mainstream VoIP is very frightening and totally unacceptable. Sure, there are some projects like Gizmo Project (now Gizmo5) which are desperately trying to make things better, but still…

So at that time early in spring of 2006 we came to a thought -- we want all that Google Talk style VoIP on our brand new mobile phones, with all the power of presence and Jabber based IM chat, we want it to be able to run through dominating GPRS/EDGE service of GSM networks as well as through WIFI hotspots, we want it to be easily and automatically switching between available hotspots like any GSM phone switches between towers, we wish it had a Google Talk like user interface. Why ? Because it’s clean, neat and intuitive, there’s nothing obsolete in its design like innumerous features of Yahoo! Messenger, nothing irritating and slowing down like in Live Messenger, and it is not using stone-age protocol like AIM. But most of all we want it to be completely based on open standards...

GTalk2VoIP server upgrade

For the last few weeks our small team has been working hard and has successfully performed moving GTalk2VoIP service to a new server platform. The new server is lots more powerful SMP machine which is now located in Mountain View, CA, USA and has alot faster internet connectivity. We expect to see significant increase in performance and service stability, as well as latency reduce resulting in higher voice quality for all calls made through our gtalk2voip service.

New server will also allow us to introduce a number of new services. The most recent service we are planning to run into production is AIM/ICQ/iChat voice support. Expect to see it soon!

Powerful CALLBACK to set up multi-channel voice conferences.

IM initiated callback is now possible with GTalk2VoIP. You can connect any number of the phones, Google Talk, MSN, Yahoo or SIP users into a voice conference by issuing a single IMmessage.

All users of Jabber based IM chat, Google Talk, MSN/Live Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger can use GTalk2VoIP service to initiate VoIP calls using CALLBACK technique. This means, our system can make VoIP call to your phone (mobile or landline), then make a call to your destination and merge two calls (legs). Callback is initiated by a single IM message sent to service@gtalk2voip.com.

It is possible to add more participants into such callback organized calls thus creating a multi-channel voice conferencing calls. We encourage Web 2.0 developers to adopt this technique into their Web services and letting people freely and easily participate in voice chats.

To initiate a callback call, please follow these simple steps:

Step 1. Subscribe to the service in one of the possible ways:
1st Way. Open your GoogleTalk (or any other IM messenger) and invite new recipient whose user id is service@gtalk2voip.com.
2nd Way. Go to the main page of this site and submit your user id by pressing "Invite" button, then accept invitation from service@gtalk2voip.com.

Step 2. Open a chat window to service@gtalk2voip.com and send it a CALLBACK command using the following syntax:

CALLBACK [phone:gtalk:yahoo:sip:]SourceLeg [phone:gtalk:yahoo:sip:]DestinationLeg [via provider1 provider2 ]

Where, SourceLeg - is your own location, DestinationLeg - is a destination you are calling to, provider1 - is a provider name which will be used to deliver call to SourceLeg, provider2 - is a provider name that is to be used to call to DestinationLeg. If providers are ommited, then the system will implicate the default behaviour to call to each leg, i.e. it will call the best rated provider first (best ASR and ACD), if that fails, it wll call the second rated, and so on.

Each leg can be one of: phone number, Google Talk, MSN, Yahoo or SIP URI. You can use the follow syntax for each of the legs:

+XXXXXXXXX or phone:XXXXXXXXX where XXXXXXXXX is a phone number (mobile or landline) in international format,
gtalk:user@gmail.com where user@gmail.com is some Google Talk user identifier,
msn:user@hotmail.com where user@hotmail.com is some MSN/Live Messenger user identifier,
yahoo:user@yahoo.com where user@yahoo.com is some Yahoo! Messenger user identifier,
sip:user@provider.com where user@provider.com is some SIP URI.

Follow-Me feature for voice capable IM clients.

We now have Follow-Me feature. It allows VoIM users to receive incoming SIP calls and forward them to any mobile or landline phone or to any SIP URI. Usage is simple, you just define a phone number you wish calls to be forwarded to. After that, if you do not unswer incoming SIP call within 20 secs it gets forwarded to your Follow-Me number automatically. Same applys if you are off-line. If Follow-Me is not defined, calls are forwarded to Voicemail system.

User-defined SIP accounts to make outgoing calls.
User-defined dialing plan.

As usual we spent lots of time coding and evaluating new ideas on our GTalk2VoIP gateway.
This time I would like to introduce another conceptually new and powerful feature: user-defined SIP providers. It's known that SIP services are becoming more and more popular on the net, most of them are kind of identical, but some are very different. For example, Gizmo Project lets you make totally free PSTN (phone) calls to almost any phone number of your friends listed in your roster; SIPNET let's you make free calls to largest cities in Russia; FreeWorldDialup lets you call thousands of other SIP users. So, we thought why not to gather all the power of SIP into one place and bring it to all VoIM users ? Why not to let VoIM users call to their friends' mobile phones through Gizmo Project for free ? For the last couple of months we were toying with this idea, we were thinking on how useful could it be and how to make it easily accessable for anyone in IM world. So, here it is. In brief, if you are a Google Talk, MSN or Yahoo messenger user, you can:

1. Define one or more of your existing SIP accounts (login, password, SIP server) in our system. You probably have SIP account and have been using them with a hard or softphone ? Now you can use them with your VoIM messanger. When defined, these accounts will be displayed only to you as alternative routes/VoIP providers (when entering CALL or COST command).

2. Define your dialing plan to route some destinations to cirtain SIP providers. You can use yours and other VoIP providers (registered in our system) together to define routing scheme appropriate for your needs.

Yahoo voice support has been fixed.

After a week of run our new Yahoo voice channel got boroken. Not because we had some error or a bug in our code, but because Yahoo team, as they say, "fixed the bug". Actually, what they did was simply re-enabling a very sophisticated authentication algorithm used to auth their users on SIP service (yes, Yahoo voice speaks SIP dialect). They presumably thought they can get rid of third-party voice services which are trying to open eyes^H^H^H^Hears to yahoo users on a vast universe of VoIP, open standards and interoperability. Not yet! Here at GTalk2VoIP TEAM we had a hard time to disassemble Yahoo Messenger application and pulling out the auth algorithm used to prevent "undesired" SIP calls to and from Yahoo. Well, we succeeded. So, our GTalk2VoIP gateway has returned with Yahoo voice support and is ready to serve all Yahoo users, allowing them to make totally free calls to MSN, Google Talk and SIP phones around the Globe and welcomes you to the world of interop. Speex codec is also supported for Yahoo. God bless disassembler! :-)

Support for Yahoo! Messenger has been added.

GTalk2VoIP now can be used with Yahoo! Messenger. All voice services previously available for Google Talk and MSN/Live Messenger are possible with Yahoo. The interface is similar: Yahoo users should subscribe to service by inviting a contact gtalk2voip@yahoo.com or from the main page of our site http://www.gtalk2voip.com/ (which we have slightly redesigned).

To call Yahoo! users from other IMs, initiate call by:
CALL someuser@yahoo.com
or
CALL yahoo:someuser@yahoo.com

To call from SIP, route your calls to:
sip:someuser_at_yahoo.com@yahoo.gtalk2voip.com.

To send IM messages:

Instant Messaging Interoperability

It's now possible with our GTalk2VoIP gateway to send IM messages between three completely different IM networks: 1) Jabber or Google Talk, 2) MSN/Live Messenger and 3) SIP/SIMPLE. If you are using any of these, you may easily send IM messages to others without any additional software installation, subscription or registration. Sending SMS messages with Google Talk and Windows Live Messenger.

A new feature we have got on our beloved GTalk2VoIP gateway. It is now possible for any Google Talk and Windows Live Messenger users to send SMS messages worldwide. The service is paid and works same way as calls to PSTN: messages are routed to cheapest carrier from those available/registered in our system. Add MSN contacts to Google Talk roster!

A new minor feature for Google Talk users: it's possible now to add MSN contacts to list of friends and make voice calls to them by pushing CALL button. To do so, just add your MSN contacts like: someuser%hotmail.com@msn.gtalk2voip.com.

Text messages sent to such contacts won't reach MSN Messegner users, though we are working on this small feature. Sort of an MSN Transport for Jabber is going to be available soon.

MSN Messenger support has been fixed!

MSN Messenger users can continue register and use all the services as it was previously announced, the roster limitation problem has been overcome. Please note, that all MSN Messenger users are now spread among several service bots named service001@gtalk2voip.com till service999@gtalk2voip.com. The name of the service bot will be assigned to new MSN users on random basis during the registration.

There're some other good news:

1. An ENUM (e164.org) support has been added. Now, when users are trying to call to phone numbers which are registered on e164.org and have SIP aliases assigned, the first attemt to route such calls is made to SIP directly, thus making the call 100% free on success. If ENUM fails, a normal calling procedure is used.

2. We have moved the service to a new location (M9 Backbone) which we believe will increase service availability.

3. Lots of bugs have been fix which affected service stability.

Our team is currently busy working on J2ME edition of Google Talk like application with voice capabilities. Release is planned on late October. Keep tracking our news!

MSN Messenger registrations are temporary off!

Adding new MSN Messenger users is temporary blocked due to some MSN protocol limitations. We are currently working on some work-around and hope to solve this issue as soon as possible. Google Talk users can continue using gateway and make calls to MSN Messenger users without problems.

Windows Live Messenger support added!

A great affort was made by our team to add new VoIP protocol to our GTalk2VoIP gateway. For now, anyone can communicate through our gateway to Windows Live Messenger users, as well as any Windows Live Messenger user can initiate calls to Google Talk users, to PSTN phones, to SIP phones or even use voicemail service! In other words, all services provided by our gateway are now available for Windows Live Messenger users. We hope this new feature will significantly increase interoperability in Instant Messaging world and VoIP communications.

Codec selection is now possible.

To make our users able to choose appropriate voice codec to achieve best voice quality for internet connection that is currently in use, we have made it possible now to choose one of the following codecs: iLBC, Speex Narrow 11k and G.711 muLaw. You can read more about it on http://www.gtalk2voip.com/codecs.html.

Default codec iLBC is used because it is supported by all known Jingle complient clients (Psi, Tapioca, etc). For Google Talk we recommend to use Speex.

SIPBroker prefix code for GTalk2VoIP has been changed.

Thanks to Martin Burns from SIP Broker we have got a new SIPBroker prefix code: * 0 1 8, which is a bit shorter and more easily memorizable.

The old code * 7 6 2 1 will remain operational for some period of time, then it will be removed (may be even deligated to some other service), so please use the new one as far as it is possible. Thank you.

Informative show status for contacts linked to gtalk2voip.com.

We have added a number of minor features to our GTalk2VoIP gateway which were made possible by latest release of Google Talk (1.0.0.95). These are the following:

1. More informative show status for all contacts linked to gtalk2voip.com, it now displays a type of call that will be made by pressing CALL button: call to phone, to SIP or SIPBroker.

2. A show status of pseudo-user service@gtalk2voip.com now displays a link to your personal account page. It is remembered after HELP or MYPAGE command, so it makes access to your page more easily and convenient.

Not much for this time, but we still keep working on more great features.

Access Google Talk from PSTN

Hello to all Google Talk users!

There's a new and very useful feature for you on our GTalk2VoIP gateway: a possibility to easily voice-call to your Google Talk from any phone number (mobile or stationary). This new feature is possible thank to SIPBroker service (http://www.sipbroker.com/) to which we established peering relations.

In general, you have to follow these steps:

1. Obtain your own SIPBroker ID from your personal page on GTalk2VoIP (follow the link displayed by MYPAGE command).

2. Choose one of the available PSTN gateway numbers. Complete list is at http://www.sipbroker.com/sipbroker/action/pstnNumbers

3. Dial the PSTN gateway number from your mobile or any other phone.

4. Punch in your SIPBroker ID using tones (DTMF) at voice prompt and wait incoming call to your Google Talk.

So, now you can give a short description to your friends on how to access you right to your Google Talk from any phone number. Hope, this feature will be very useful and helpful to everyone. Besides, it is available free of charge :-).

One click calls to PSTN from Google Talk!

Hello dear Google Talk users!

Yes, this is a very new feature of our GTalk2VoIP gateway. Now you can add your friends phone numbers to your roster, then call them at any time just by clicking phone handset () icon. So your roster will look like this:

You also can rename items in your roster to make phone numbers more sensable.

This feature is a result of more deep integration we made to our gateway with a Jabber server via Jabber/XMPP transport. Here below are several examples on how to add Phone participants to your roster:

1. Ordinary phones:

Type in a complete phone number (e.g. [+]<COUNTRY><AREA><PHONE>) followed by gtalk2voip.com into search field in your Google Talk (like: +16502530000@gtalk2voip.com). We recommend to put leading '+' character so your phone entries would pop-up in the top of the list, but this is not mandatory and can be omited.

After that, press Enter, so Google Talk will ask you to invite a new friend.

After you press [Next>>] and [Finish] buttons, your newly invited friend's Phone number will appear on the roster. Click [CALL] button or a phone handset () icon to initiate a voice call.

2. SIP phones:

This is mostly the same as with ordinary phones, except that you have to translate SIP IDs according to a following simple rules:

When you add someone's ID you have to:
a) substitute '@' (at sign) with '%' (percent sign);
b) add @gtalk2voip.com in the end of the string.

Example:
If you would like to call your friend who is using Gizmo Project phone with id like ekorolenko@gizmoproject.com, you have to add to your roster the following: ekorolenko%gizmoproject.com@gtalk2voip.com.

This seems quite complex in the beginning, but it is really not. Alot easier than typing commands in command line based interface I guess :-).

Google Talk now calls SIP phones!

Hello again!

As usual, I would like to introduce new features of GTalk2VoIP gateway we have been working hard on part two weeks.

Today we announce a full SIP support. Now, any Google Talk user can make outgoing SIP calls to any SIP device, as well as can receive calls from SIP network (any SIP complient phone, gateway or other device). We have tested this new service very hard on compatibility to SIP devices, softphones and public SIP networks. We conclude that our service works well with most SIP implementations. For example, you can easily call Gizmo Project user by initiating a command like:

CALL username@gizmoproject.com

or

CALL 17470000000@gizmoproject.com

Any Google Talk user can now be accessed from a SIP network by calling from SIP phone. To do this, a caller MUST replace a domain part of GTalk id (@gmail.com) with gtalk2voip.com. Like in following example:

I use SJPhone SIP phone. When I want to call my friend whose Google Talk ID is ekorolenko@gmail.com, I type: sip:ekorolenko@gtalk2voip.com, or just a ekorolenko@gtalk2voip.com.

Hi!

Call from the Web service also known as Webcall is now available from GTalk2VoIP. This service allows you to receive your customers' phone calls directly from your web site or home page. There's no need to install additinal software (like SIP phones). Your customers (or those who surf your web pages) do not even need a Google Talk installed. Only requiremet is to have an ordinary or a mobile phone. There are four call schemes are possible with our webcall service:

Web surfer's phone -> Your phone,
Web surfer's GTalk -> Your phone,
Web surfer's phone -> Your GTalk,
Web surfer's GTalk -> Your GTalk.

Complete privacy is guaranteed, neither you nor your customer may not know each other's phone numbers or GTalk IDs. This is also a very easy to use service. All you need is just to put a small icon into your contact list or in goods description you sell.

Hello again!

We have been working hard past ten days. More users tend to come and use our servces, as a consequence a lot more bugs and mulfunctions are getting to appearance. Some bugs are already fixed, some others are still hunted :).

Anyway, I would like to thank all those who tried our serivce as well as those who use it daily.

A also would like to introduce our latest release of GTalk2VoIP plugin 1.2 for Google Desktop 3. It now lets you work with all services we offer (see some pics below). Plugin is downloadable from http://www.gtalk2voip.com/gtalk_plugin.html. As usual, everyone is welcomed to test.

We have seven days of running service. Practice showed that most (if not 80%) users are not capable with text-based command driven interfaces, even if they are well documented and online HELP message available :-). To solve this, we have coded a simple, but useful plugin for Google Desktop 3. Everyone can download it from http://www.gtalk2voip.com/gtalk_plugin.html and freely use. Hope this will help our users feel more comfortable.

Today we have had hard time fixing bugs in core library, that is why most of the day gtalk2voip service was not available. Our apologies for inconvenience and thanks for patience. Please don't stop exploring our services! :-).

We gone public! People come to test our services from around the Globe, lots of visitors from India and China. Serveral serious bugs were discovered and fixed. For example, NAT traversal was improved and now services can be accessable from behind a proxy.

Practics showed that text-based interface is a big problem for average user, so we consider coding some google desktop plugin which will give users more intuitive interface to services.

Our service is about to be opened for public use. Lots of bugs fixed. Added two payment systems: credit card processor (multicards.com) and WebMoney (wmtransfer.com).
Currently we need more voip service providers to cover more destinations in cheaper way :-).

Hi!

We are developing a brand-new voip service for all GoogleTalk users. Most services, such as Voice Conferencing, Voice mailing and Offline messaging will be available to everyone free of charge. Some others, like outgoing calls to PSTN (ordinary phones) and incoming calls from PSTN will be charged but very very cheap :-).
